Understanding Solar Calculations

This calculator uses standard astronomical algorithms (incorporating solar declination, equation of time, atmospheric refraction, and location latitude/longitude) to determine exact times for solar positions.

Twilight Phase Definitions:

  • Official Sunrise / Sunset: The precise moment when the upper edge of the Sun's disk touches the horizon (accounting for 0.833° atmospheric refraction).
  • Civil Twilight: Occurs when the center of the Sun is between 0° and 6° below the horizon. Outdoor illumination is generally adequate for daily tasks.
  • Nautical Twilight: Occurs when the Sun is 6° to 12° below the horizon. Sailors can navigate using visible horizons and stars.
  • Astronomical Twilight: Occurs when the Sun is 12° to 18° below the horizon. Beyond this boundary, sky glow is negligible.
