Quick start guide

How to Open and Edit a CSV File Online

You don't need advanced spreadsheet knowledge to edit a CSV file. Follow these four steps to open, organize and save your data with UtilityGlen.

01

Choose your CSV

Drop your .csv file into the upload area or select it from your device. The contents appear as a table.

02

Explore your data

Use the search box, sort a column or change the number of displayed rows to navigate your dataset.

03

Make your changes

Edit cells, update column names, add rows and columns or remove information you no longer need.

04

Download your file

Click Download CSV to save your edited dataset back to your device.

Helpful tip: Once you successfully open a file, the large upload panel disappears to make room for your data. Use the Open New File button beside New table to load another CSV.

Bring order to the chaos

Find the right row. In the right order.

Working with a long CSV file can feel like searching through an endless list. Column sorting turns that messy collection of information into something much easier to browse.

Every column includes sorting options. Sort customer names alphabetically, arrange stock quantities by value or put your highest numbers first.

Sorting rearranges the underlying data rows, and CSV export preserves that order. Download your file when you want to save the sorted result.

More rows. Less wasted space.

UtilityGlen uses a compact spreadsheet-style table with smaller text and tighter row spacing. This makes it easier to inspect more records without oversized cells taking up your screen.

Choose how many rows to display per page. The table expands vertically with the selected rows, so you can scroll through the webpage normally rather than navigating a separate vertical scrollbar inside the editor.

CSV basics explained

What Is a CSV File?

CSV stands for Comma-Separated Values. A CSV file is a plain-text format used to store tabular data. Each record is typically stored on a separate line, with commas separating individual fields.

CSV files are widely used because they are relatively simple and can be exchanged between databases, spreadsheet applications, e-commerce platforms and data-processing tools.

Example CSV content products.csv
Product,Category,Stock
Mouse,Electronics,120
Keyboard,Electronics,64
Notebook,Stationery,300

UtilityGlen transforms this text into an editable table so you can focus on the actual information, rather than manually locating commas or adjusting individual lines of text.

Your CSV data stays in your browser.

UtilityGlen's CSV Viewer & Editor performs file reading, table editing, sorting, searching and CSV generation locally in your browser. The tool does not need to upload your CSV file to a server to perform these operations.

This makes it a practical option when you want to inspect files without sending their contents to an online CSV-processing service. As with any browser-based application, use a trusted device and follow your organization's data-handling policies when working with confidential information.

CSV Editing Tips Worth Knowing

A few simple habits can help you avoid common problems when viewing, sorting and modifying CSV datasets.

Check your header row

If your CSV includes column names, leave First row is header enabled. If it doesn't, turn that setting off so the first data record is displayed normally.

Export before you leave

Your edits are not automatically written back to the original local file. Use Download CSV to save your changes before closing the page.

Search is not deletion

Searching temporarily narrows the visible records. It doesn't remove unmatched rows from the dataset or exclude them from the standard CSV export.

Answers without the guesswork

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you might want to know about opening, editing, sorting and downloading CSV files online.

Is the UtilityGlen CSV Viewer & Editor free?
Yes. The CSV Viewer & Editor is free to use in your browser. You can open CSV files, edit cells, search and sort data, manage rows and columns, and download your edited CSV without needing a paid spreadsheet application.
How do I edit a CSV file online without Excel?
Open your file using the upload area at the top of the CSV editor. Click any editable cell to change its value, use the row and column controls when necessary, and select Download CSV to save the result. No Excel installation is required.
Are CSV files uploaded to a server?
No CSV upload is required for editing. The tool reads and processes CSV files locally in your browser, rather than submitting their contents to a server for conversion or editing.
Can I sort CSV data alphabetically from A to Z or Z to A?
Yes. Use the Sort menu in the relevant column header. Choose A to Z for ascending alphabetical order or Z to A for descending alphabetical order. Sorting rearranges the dataset, not only the currently visible page.
Can I sort numbers from smallest to largest or largest to smallest?
Yes. Numeric sorting options include Min to Max and Max to Min. These are useful for numeric fields such as stock counts, quantities, scores and other numeric values. For best results, keep numeric columns consistent and avoid mixing text with numbers.
How many CSV rows can I display at once?
You can choose to display 50, 100, 200, 500 or 1,000 data rows per page. When you select 1,000 rows, the table expands vertically and you scroll through the webpage instead of using an internal vertical table scrollbar. Larger datasets can be browsed using pagination.
Can I add or delete rows and columns?
Yes. Use Add row or Add column to expand the dataset. The tool also provides row and column deletion controls. Take care when deleting data because there is currently no undo feature for reversing deletions.
Can I search for specific text inside a CSV file?
Yes. The Search rows field checks cell values and displays matching records. Search is case-insensitive, making it useful for finding names, products, IDs and other text without needing to match capitalization exactly.
Does the editor support CSV files with commas inside quoted values?
Yes. The CSV parser handles comma-separated fields containing properly quoted commas, double quotes and line breaks. This is important when working with addresses, descriptions and other values that contain punctuation or multiple lines.
Can I create a new CSV file from scratch?
Yes. Click New table to create a starter table. You can rename the headers, add records, edit individual values, create columns and download the finished data as a CSV file.
Can I edit an Excel XLSX file with this tool?
The editor is designed for CSV files, not native XLSX workbooks. If your data is stored in Excel, save or export the relevant worksheet as a comma-separated CSV file first, then open that CSV in UtilityGlen.
Will my changes be saved automatically?
No. Changes remain in the current browser session until you export them. Click Download CSV to save the updated dataset. Closing or refreshing the page can cause unsaved changes to be lost.
Does downloading the CSV include every row or only search results?
The standard Download CSV action exports the entire current dataset, including rows that may be hidden by a search filter or pagination. It also preserves the changes and sorting order applied to the table.

Your CSV. Your data. Your way.

Skip the complicated workflow. Open your CSV, make the changes you need and download the results — all from one practical, browser-based editor.
