Needle in a Haystack: the hidden-object search game

Settle into a quick search-and-find challenge. Find a silver needle in The Field or a brass key on Autumn Floor, beat the ticking clock, and see how many rounds you can clear. The scenes grow busier as you advance, while each theme keeps its own expedition progress.

Choose your search

Two independent expeditions

Pick a theme above the game board and learn its scene. Your target changes with the world, and your run belongs to that world alone: level, score, streak, hint charge, timer, and best score are kept separately. Switching scenes pauses the expedition you leave.

Expedition A

The Field · locate the needle

Search a golden bed of straw for a slim silver needle. The familiar field fills with more visual detail as your rounds climb, asking you to spot a small shape among the stalks.

Target: silver needle
Expedition B

Autumn Floor · find the key

Look across a woodland floor scattered with rust, amber, and gold leaves, twigs, seeds, and acorns. A new leaf-litter arrangement appears as you advance through this separate search.

Target: old brass key

How a round works

Start with 60 seconds. Find the hidden object to score points, bank extra time, and move straight into a tougher round. There is no set finish line: the search keeps going while you can keep the clock alive.

  1. 1Choose a scene. The Field hides a needle; Autumn Floor hides a brass key.
  2. 2Scan the full board. Check the edges, gaps, overlaps, and tiny differences in shape.
  3. 3Tap or click your find. A correct find earns points and adds 4 seconds.
  4. 4Keep the run alive. Every fifth find adds another 10 seconds; each new round grows denser.

Scorebook & supplies

Quick, accurate finds help build a high score. Consecutive finds build a streak, while a wrong guess breaks the streak and costs a little time. Look carefully before spending a click.

Speed pays: faster finds earn more points.
Keep a streak: consecutive finds increase your streak.
Use a hint: spend 250 points and one available charge to briefly circle the target.
Restock: a spent hint charge can return every three finds in that theme.
Field note: hint charges, score, and refill progress belong to each theme separately. A hint can be used once during a round.

Read the scene like a tracker

Three useful habits

When the haystack or leaf litter gets crowded, avoid searching at random. Give your eyes a route to follow and compare the shapes you see with the target you are looking for. A calm, repeatable scan helps cover the board without circling back over the same patch again and again.

Sweep in sections

Scan from left to right, then move down the board. A steady path helps you check the edges as well as the middle.

Compare silhouettes

The needle is slim; the key has a distinct bow and shaft. Check outline and angle, since the target can be turned.

Mind the clock

A wrong guess costs time. If the board feels tricky, use a paid hint when you have enough points and a charge.

Controls & play notes

Built for quick visits

Mouse, touch & keyboard

Tap the target on a phone or tablet, or click it with a mouse on desktop. You can also use the keyboard: press H for an available hint, Space to pause during a run, and Escape to resume from pause.

Sound is optional

Sound effects can be switched on or off with the sound control above the board. Pause the current run whenever you need a break, or hop to the other theme; the inactive timer waits until you return.

What is Needle in a Haystack?

It is a free hidden-object game played in your browser. Search straw for a small silver needle in The Field, or hunt for an old brass key among the autumn leaves in Autumn Floor. Find the object before time runs out to score points and continue to the next round.

Are The Field and Autumn Floor connected?

They are two separate searches. Each theme tracks its own level, score, streak, hint charge, timer, and all-time best. Changing themes pauses the run you leave and restores the other theme’s saved game state.

Does the game have an ending?

There is no preset final level. The target becomes harder to spot as the scene grows denser, but a successful find keeps the round sequence moving. Continue as long as you can keep time on the clock.

How much time does each find add?

Every correct find adds 4 seconds. Every fifth find adds a further 10 seconds, so that milestone find banks 14 seconds total.

How do hints work?

A hint costs 250 points, uses one charge, and briefly draws a circle around the hidden target. Each theme begins with one charge; if you have spent it, a charge can be restored every three finds.

Can I pause or switch the sound off?

Yes. Use the pause and sound buttons above the game board. Sound effects are optional, and changing themes pauses the inactive run.

Can I play on mobile without downloading an app?

Yes. The game runs in a web browser with touch controls for phones and tablets and mouse controls for desktop. There is no app installation required.
